Terms of Service

Last updated: October 21, 2026

These terms cover your use of Permit Gossip, a service that emails summaries of building permits taken from public records. Permit Gossip is run by James Schnitzius, a sole proprietor, at the address below. By signing up, starting a trial, or paying, you agree to these terms.

1. What you get

Depending on your plan, you get email alerts and spreadsheets listing recent building permits for the counties and trades you pick. We may add, change, or drop counties, fields, or features as public data sources change.

2. Where the data comes from, and no guarantee

All permit information comes from public records published by cities, counties, and other government offices. We don't create it and we can't check every record. Records may be late, incomplete, wrong, or changed after we send them. The service is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, including accuracy, completeness, or fitness for a particular purpose. Please confirm details before you rely on them.

3. How you may use it

You may use alerts for your own business, such as finding jobs or customers. You may not resell, republish, or share alerts or spreadsheets outside your company, or scrape or copy the service in bulk. If you contact homeowners or businesses, you're responsible for following the laws that apply to you, including do-not-call, CAN-SPAM, and any state or local solicitation rules.

4. Free trial

Paid plans start with a 14-day free trial. A card is required to start any trial. Cancel anytime before day 14 and you won't be charged. Unless you cancel before day 14, your card is charged the plan price automatically when the trial ends.

Founding offer. The Founding Starter price ($39 a month or $390 a year) is limited to the first 25 members, counted across monthly and yearly together and including members still in their free trial. Once 25 spots are taken the offer closes. The count on our site can lag by a few minutes; if the last spot is taken while you check out, we'll tell you, and you can cancel or switch to regular Starter at no charge. Founding members keep the founding price for as long as their subscription stays active without a break. If you cancel, or your trial ends without payment, the founding price ends and any later sign-up is at the regular price.

5. Billing

Payments are processed by Stripe. Subscriptions renew automatically every month or year, depending on what you chose, until you cancel. Prices are in US dollars and shown on our pricing page before you pay. If we change a price, we'll email you at least 30 days before it applies to your next renewal. One-time reports are charged once.

6. Cancel anytime

You can cancel anytime through the customer portal (the "Manage subscription" link on our site) or by sending us a message through our contact form. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again. We don't give partial refunds for unused time unless the law requires it. If something went wrong, contact us and we'll do our best to make it right.

30-day results guarantee. Call 10 contacts from your list. If you don't get a single real conversation in 30 days, we'll refund you in full. To claim it, message us through our contact form within 30 days of your first paid charge. This guarantee is an exception to the no-partial-refunds rule above.

Not a consumer report. Permit Gossip is not a consumer reporting agency, and our alerts, spreadsheets and reports are not consumer reports under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). You may not use them, in whole or in part, to decide anyone's eligibility for credit, employment, insurance, housing, or any other purpose covered by the FCRA.

7. Your account

Give us an accurate email address and keep it current. We may suspend or end accounts that break these terms, don't pay, or misuse the service.

8. Limit of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Permit Gossip and James Schnitzius aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for lost profits or lost business, from using or not being able to use the service or its data. Our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If we make a material change, we'll email active subscribers before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Indiana.
